DREAM/PHIL-LiDAR 1 Program Acquires LEICA ALS-80, RCD-30, and ERDAS Training

As incorporated in the acquisition of the brand new Airborne Laser Scanner-80 (ALS-80) topographic LiDAR scanner and the RCD-30 metric aerial camera system from Leica Geomatics, the Leica ALS-80, RCD-30, and ERDAS Imagine Training was provided to 28 personnel from UP DREAM/PHIL-LiDAR 1 last March 28 – April 11, 2016 at the Asean Aerospace Corporation (AAC) Hangar, Clark City, Pampanga and April 12-16, 2016 at the National Engineering Center (NEC), University of the Philippines Diliman.

Lecturers who came from Leica Geomatics AG from Switzerland were Airborne Sensors Service Support Engineers Dr. Oleg Souleimanov and Young Liu for ALS-80 and RCD-30 lessons respectively. Remote Sensing Specialist at Certeza Infosys Corporation, Forester Liezel Dizon and Authorized Instructor Mr. Rolando Jimenez Jr. conducted the training on ERDAS Imagine.

The course format focused on the workflow of ALS-80 and RCD-30 using the programs MissionPro with Aeroplan80, Inertia Explorer, CloudPro, FramePro, FlightPro, and ERDAS Imagine. The 15-day training in AAC Hangar, Clark City included successful mounting and installation, test flight, calibration, and data processing using the equipment. The ALS-80 and RCD-30 systems were unpacked and all parts were inspected and checked. The systems were assembled and operated using ground power supply. Both were found operational.

DREAM Program

The objective of the course is to provide technical training to DREAM/PHIL-LiDAR 1 personnel to study the functions and workflow of the new instruments. Through this training, operations of LiDAR data acquisition and processing carry on continuously to fulfill the mandates of the program in obtaining quality, accurate, and relevant LiDAR data for flood modeling and flood hazard mapping.

Additionally, it is the venue for DREAM/LiDAR 1 Program to examine and assess if the systems operate fully within the required parameters and accuracy specifications. This includes unpacking and inspection of all parts, installation of the systems to the aircraft, and assembly and test operations.
